After General Yamashita decided to abandon Manila without a fight in February 1945 and to retreat to a defensive position around Baguio, Tokyo Imperial Headquarters overrode his objections and sent in 15,000 sailors and marines under Rear Admiral Iwabuchi. Iwabuchi contested the city street by street, demolishing it entirely with the help of the 4,000 troops left by Yamashita and lost every Japanese soldier in the process.

Iwabuchi himself made a last stand at Intramuros. He showed no mercy, especially with regard to the Filipinos: the final count was 1,000 US, 16,000 Japanese and 100,000 Filipino dead.
